In Sunday’s passage, Nicodemus, a religious leader, approached Jesus wanting to know who He was. Instead of revealing His identity, Jesus told Nicodemus what Nicodemus needed to do: He needed to be “Born again”. Nicodemus did not understand. This misunderstanding came to a head in this exchange:
“Nicodemus said to Him, “How can these things (the need to be born again) be?” Jesus answered and said to him, “Are you the teacher of Israel and do not understand these things?” John 3:9-10
Both Nicodemus and Jesus are in disbelief. Nicodemus can’t believe that being born again is the basis of a relationship with God. And Jesus can’t believe that Nicodemus doesn’t understand this truth. Nicodemus is THE TEACHER of Israel and yet he doesn’t understand the need to be born again.
Jesus is concerned. How concerned? Think about a head mechanic at an auto dealership telling the service manager that he did not understand the need for oil changes in vehicles. What kind of service would that dealership offer? Lethal. Oil is the lifeblood of the engine. Dirty oil will wreck an engine. In the same way, we need the change of heart that Jesus brings when we are born again. Spiritual counsel that doesn’t begin with the call to be born again will ruin lives just like not changing the oil will ruin an engine.
I’m praying we understand the need to be born again.
