In the movie Terminator 1, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a cyborg assassin sent back in time to kill Sarah Connor. However, in Terminator 2, he returns as a retooled robot sent back in time to save Sarah Connor from a new more advanced assassin on his way to kill her. Early in Terminator 2, as Schwarzenegger breaks into the facility where Connor is held, he knows the more advanced assassin is on the way. After freeing Connor from the security officers holding her, he reaches down to Connor and makes this statement: “Come with me if you want to live.'' At that moment, Sarah Connor has to answer the question, “Who is this guy?” The story of the movie is that she trusts him and he saves her life.
In His time with His disciples, Jesus brought them to that point of decision. Like Sarah Connor, they had to answer the question: “Who is this guy?”
"Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, He was asking His disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” And they said, “Some say John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but still others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
We might be confused about Jesus’ identity. Many in Jesus’ day thought He was a prophet. We might be confused as to why Jesus came. Like Sarah Connor, we might wonder if we can really trust Jesus. We might wonder if He’ll save our life or ruin our life. Notice how Jesus answers Peter in verse 17.
"And Jesus said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. "
Jesus tells Peter that he is “blessed” for realizing that Jesus is so much more than a prophet or teacher. Blessed means favored. Peter has favor with God because he realizes that Jesus is the Son of God. But Peter didn’t reach this conclusion on his own, God the Father revealed this truth to him.
So, who do you say that Jesus is? If you aren’t sure, ask God the Father for insight into the fullness of Christ. Like the robot in Terminator 2, He is reaching out to you with this message:
“Come with Me, if you want fullness of life.”
